Bowdoin College opens ‘Beyond the Claims’ gallery & event exploring Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act

Bowdoin College is opening a new photo gallery, “Beyond the Claims– Stories from the Land and the Heart” on April 22, 2026. This exhibit will showcase critical insight into the human implications of the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act legislation.

For the last three years, Bodwin College has been engaging individuals from Wabanaki and Maine communities about those impacted by MICSA for generations. It has curated a personal oral history interview along with the gallery.

Interviews came from those with diverse backgrounds. From Wabanaki elders, Tribal Chiefs, legislators and artist that have seen the impacts of this law.

An event about the exhibit and issues starts at 3:00 p.m. on April 22 and will include three panelists, Kate Russell, Juanita Grant and Darrell Newell, that helped curate the gallery. It will be held at the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library basement. Those interested can RSVP to the event
