‘Ouilmette’ doc screening comes to Northwestern U. for Women’s History Month

The documentary “Ouilmette” will screen in honor of Women’s History Month at Northwestern University’s Block Cinema on March 14
The screening is sponsored by the Cinema, Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum, Evanston History Center, Wilmette History Museum.
“Ouilmette” was produced by Susan L. Kelsey along with Sharon Hoostraten (Citizen Band Potawaromi) to create this film. Following the screening, there will be a questionnaire with both Kelsey and Hoogstraten.
“Ouilmette” follows Hoogstraten’s own search for her Indigenous heritage, a path from Chicago all the way down to Kansas. Along the way, the documentary highlights forced removals of Native communities and families and how it reshaped them.
Hoogstraten’s story ultimately reveals a connection between people, place and memory. The screening starts at 1 p.m. at Block Cinema and has free admission.
