Haskell Goes Vogue with New Fashion Show

By Emma Saville
Indigenous Couture Goes Vogue Vol 2, also known as Haskell Runway on Instagram, brings 13 designers to Haskell Indian Nations University (Haskell) to share their cultures through fashion and storytelling.
Following the first runway in 2024, Indigenous Couture Goes Vogue aims to continue to bring opportunities for Native students and build community at Haskell.
One organizer Esmarie Cariaga (Asante Dakota Nation) told Good Morning Indian Country, “The whole purpose of this event, why it was created is because we’re not really indigenous designers. Indigenous people don’t really get to be in spaces like high couture runway shows, and so that was one of the points of creating [the show]. This is basically, ‘let’s create our own platform.’ … I’m really grateful because it’s a time to create community, it brings us all together, and it’s a positive, healthy thing, and fashion brings everyone together.”
Participating designers include a range of professional and student work. One Haskell student, Alyssa Wilson, is bringing her work as 20 Froggies Designs to the runway with mixed media outfits and accessories.
“Participating in the show means a lot to me but even more to my family,” said Wilson. “It has been about carrying on lost arts or traditions and remixing them in different ways. Truly proving to myself that I can make my dreams into a reality. This way I also get to showcase my art, different media and bring meaning to what I do. I love bringing the 20 Froggies name to others and the story behind it. This way I am carrying the spirit Aawok of my great-grandfather and his brother- AT and Walter Gray and all my immediate family.”
This year Stella Standingbear will be hosting and performing at the show.
The show will be held on May 3 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Haskell Coffin Sports Complex. Haskell students will receive free admissions. General Admission is $10, Comfort Seating $20 and VIP with swag bag is $50. All proceeds and ticket sales will benefit the Haskell Foundation and students impacted by recent federal budget cuts.
