Art is my savior

The National Endowment of the Arts has released a short tribute film to traditional Lakota artist and Educator Steve Tamayo (Sicangu Lakota). The video can be watched for free and is meant to celebrate America’s cultural heritage.

“Art is my savior. My reconnection to who I am. It opens the discussion of our culture, because you should understand who you are, first and foremost,” Tamayo said in the video.

Tamayo works in creating traditional items such as buffalo robes, that signify and teach the history of the Lakota people. He helps guide younger generations to understand and value their legacy and heritage.

The NEA has multiple short videos of artists who are represented through the National Heritage Fellowship and can all be watched for free.
