Applications open for Minnesota Historical Society’s $30,000 Native Artist-in-Residence Program

The Minnesota Historical Society is opening applications for a Native artist residency that provides a $30,000 grant along with up to $4,000 for research travel.

Established in 2013, the Native American Artist-in-Residence program provides financial support, open access to MNHS collections, and opportunities to visit regional museums and learn from artists and elders.

Over the course of six to 12 months, the Artist-in-Residence will advance their understanding of their artform before developing a research-based community project to share their knowledge with their home communities.

The program is open to artists practicing all forms of cultural art. Requirements include residency in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Applicants must also be recognized by their Tribal community, although federally recognized enrollment is not required.

Applications opened Nov. 1 with a Jan. 11, 2027 priority deadline and a Jan. 25 final deadline. To learn more, click here.
