National Gallery of Canada opens applications for war art research fellowship supporting Indigenous military art scholarship

The National Gallery of Canada is accepting applications for its Rodger and Joann McLennan Canadian War Art Research Fellowship Program, with a deadline of June 26, 2026, for the April 2026 intake. The one-year fellowship, valued at up to CAD $5,000, supports advanced scholarly research in Canadian and Indigenous Canadian war and military art.
The fellowship runs from September 1, 2026, and is tenable at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Funding can be applied toward relocation and living expenses, research travel, project supplies, professional services, and stipend support.
Eligible researchers may pursue projects across a range of media — including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and mixed media — with supported activities spanning publications, exhibition development, thesis and dissertation work, and independent academic research. Projects are expected to draw on collections held at the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum, and Library and Archives Canada.
The program is open to a broad field of applicants, including art historians, curators, critics, conservators, graduate students, independent researchers, and professionals in museology and the humanities. International candidates are also eligible, provided they obtain the necessary visas and entry documentation before travel.
The fellowship is intended to deepen scholarly understanding of Canadian and Indigenous military art traditions, support the preservation of cultural knowledge, and encourage interdisciplinary research that brings new perspectives to the history, identity, and memory embedded in war-related visual art.
Applications should include a research proposal, methodology, expected outcomes, a timeline, and a budget. For more information, visit the National Gallery of Canada website.
