Invite open for Torres Strait artists to show at Indigenous art fairs in Cairns, Darwin

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is calling on First Nations artists from across the Torres Strait region, including Bamaga and Seisia, to submit their works for display at two of Australia’s premier Indigenous art events in Cairns and Darwin.
The TSRA’s Gab Titui Cultural Centre will represent regional artists at the 2026 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF), ensuring local works are showcased on national and international stages.
TSRA Chairperson George Nona encouraged all local First Nations artists to take part, particularly those unable to travel to the events themselves.
“Your art represents the region, yumi culture and yumi stories,” Mr Nona said.
“It is important our works are showcased at national events to highlight the unique talent and style across Zenadth Kes.
“Art fairs are an opportunity for our artists to build careers, earn national and international recognition, and generate income from their works.”
The Gab Titui Cultural Centre regularly attends CIAF and DAAF on behalf of artists who cannot be there in person but wish to share their work more broadly. This year, the Centre will present both traditional and contemporary pieces, featuring diverse collections from emerging and established First Nations artists across the region.
“These strategic relationships have helped local First Nations artists to explore opportunities beyond the region with some taking the next step by going overseas to exhibit, perform and learn,” Mr Nona said.
“Art fairs provide artists with exposure and sales opportunities with interest from international and national collectors, gallery officials and enthusiasts alike.”
The 2026 CIAF will run from 9–12 July under the theme “Reclamation & Regeneration”, calling for artists to present works that share their truth, ideas and vision in safe surrounds and with unfettered passion.
DAAF will be held from August 6-9 as it celebrates its 20th anniversary, building on last year’s record-breaking event which attracted more than 28,000 visitors and generated $5.1 million in sales for First Nations artists and art centres nationwide.
TSRA has partnered with CIAF for several years and is a sponsor of the CIAF People’s Choice Award.
Artwork submissions for both fairs are now open, with Gab Titui Cultural Centre staff available to assist artists in preparing and delivering their works.
All artworks must arrive at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre by 1 June 2026 to meet shipping deadlines.
Artists interested in submitting their work can contact the Centre on 07 4069 0888 to express their interest and arrange freight. Artworks must be securely packaged and suitable for travel from their community to Waiben (Thursday Island).
